Masai Influence on Fashion

Influenced by a Masai blanket from his Kenyan childhood, Louis Vuitton’s style manager, Kim Jones, took the spring/Summer 2012 collection on an exotic journey. Travel formed a central theme to the West-meets-Africa show. Gold and navy tops made from raffia, alligator jackets, midnight blue silk mohair suits, and a sea of red and blue plaids, made this show a real extravaganza. Sticking with the travel theme, clothes were versatile and suitcase-friendly, such as the fold away parka. The more Western looks were classic and elegant, with a casual feel as suit pants were rolled up. The show was sophisticated with an adventurous old-school charm.Check out Fashion Blog for fashion, style and beauty.

Fashion and Masai Tribe

The Maasai (sometimes spelled "Masai" or "Masaai") are a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known of African ethnic groups, due to their residence near the many game parks of East Africa, and their distinctive customs and dress. They speak Maa (ɔl Maa), a member of the Nilo-Saharan language family that is related to Dinka and Nuer, and are also educated in the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania: Swahili and English. The Maasai population has been reported as numbering 841,622 in Kenya in the 2009 census, compared to 377,089 in the 1989 census.
